Reflections — The Voice of What’s Possible (R005)

Today’s reflections asks the hard question of whether we teachers are willing to embrace the courage necessary to be the voice of what’s possible, or are we willing to settle for asking for a small thing that everyone will say “yes” to?

Reflections — Happiness Develops Ability | Combine Interest and Training (R001)

Dr. Suzuki said that “happiness develops ability.” He relates the story of his young nephew’s difficulty learning to differentiate number 4 and 7 while learning his first ten numbers. Dr. Suzuki discusses the problem of combining interest and training so that the child can look at the child’s learning and see clearly.

Reflections — Gifts That Give

Today’s reflection is about a special gift that will give again and again to our children, our families, and our communities. Listen and see if you agree that this gift is the most precious gift that we can offer to our children, for it will continue to give over and over.

Reflections — How to Create Dislike

Dr. Suzuki described other educational methods: scolding, nagging, yelling, and complaints. He called these educational strategies the “How Not to Develop Ability” Method. What Dr. Suzuki advocated instead was to create the desire to learn. This episode reflects on this idea.

Reflections — The Triangle Concept

Dr. Suzuki liked triangles for the powerful pictures that triangles could represent. Today’s reflection considers two ways at looking at a triangle representation: the child’s ability to absorb the child’s environment, and the adult’s ability to determine the adult’s growth and development. One triangle is inverted, and which one may surprise you!
